Work with eating disorder clients? Want advanced training beyond what you receive in dietetics education programs?
Dietetics training programs include such a limited introduction to eating disorders and psychology that many dietitians treating eating disorders don’t understand why they are unable to “reach” certain clients or their family members. Dietitians who are unaware of the impact personality traits can have on eating disorder recovery may fall into the trap of doubting their own competence when these clients struggle, or violating professional boundaries in an effort to connect.
Personality Disorders 411 will explain personality disorders and why they often interact and overlap with eating disorder symptoms. The majority of time will be spent learning how to “spin” nutrition counseling to meet the needs of different personality types, communicating safely with potentially volatile clients and their family members, and keeping professional boundaries.
Personality disorders, whether diagnosed or not, can impact our ability to connect with our eating disordered clients and to promote the behavior change necessary to eating disorder recovery. This presentation is for all dietitians who would like more strategies for understanding and facilitating nutrition counseling for patients with personality issues.
